“THE GATEKEEPERS” is a documentary film full of meaning and explanation. It educates Americans, and reveals and puts into context what’s going on between Israel and Palestine, something that is direly needed. The images – “terrorists” hands zip-tied behind their backs, the spaghetti-like metal of exploded buses – can’t help remind us of the impact 9/11 had on America, of our prison camp in Guantanamo Bay Cuba, and how these bus attacks could easily happen in the U.S. But while director Dror Moreh has done a great service in making this documentary, visually it’s a clunker. The white subtitles disappear into the screen at times, the historical black-and-white video footage can appear out of focus and be difficult to digest on the big screen, and much of the computer animation and other added manufactured images often confuse the story lines instead of serving to clarify them. Our recommendation? Wait to this one comes out on home video, but do watch and learn.
